Our inspiration comes from Portland’s professional baseball team from the 1970’s, The Portland Mavericks. As Major League Baseball’s only independent baseball team, the name, “The Independent,” pays homage to the Mavericks and what they stood for. The rogue, anti-establishment spirit is a defining characteristic of Portlander’s still today.
“The Mavericks were owned by ex-minor league player and television actor Bing Russell, and were initially the league’s only independent club. Russell’s motto in life was one three-lettered word: “fun.”
The Independent is locally owned, and prides itself in being a warm, comfortable environment for people to grab a quick lunch and meet up for happy hour! Come enjoy a whiskey cocktail, one of our 20 Pacific NW-inspired beer taps, and classic bar nosh sourced from our local bounty with a few stadium-style favorites from across the nation. Come catch a game on one of our 32 flat panel TV’s and a projection system for big games. Your team will be on!
