    September 26, 2013

We recently caught up with Jillian from Catch My Party, the ultimate DIY party resource, to talk about some of the latest party trends, and vintage picnic parties are in! There’s nothing quite like a vintage backyard or garden picnic party to make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time to your childhood. Check out our tips and tricks on how to throw your own truly romantic vintage picnic parties!

    Choosing your Event Space

First things first. Are you planning an intimate gathering that can be held in your backyard? Or something a bit bigger that requires an event venue? It’s important to figure out these basics before buying any extras for your party. Once you have these details all figured out, you can get to the fun part… decorations and food!

    Vintage Suitcase Turned Picnic Basket

This item should be on your “Must-Have” list for vintage picnic parties. You could make this yourself if you’re crafty and happen to have an old stylish suitcase lying around. Simply line the suitcase with new fabric and create compartments and straps to hold all your picnic gear in place. Alternatively, you could probably find one of these picnic baskets on Amazon or at your local flea market.

    Croquet anyone?

It’s always nice to have some games to entertain your party guests, and croquet is the perfect game for vintage picnic parties. The trick here is to really search for a truly vintage croquet set. Picking up any new set at Target or Walmart will throw off your entire vintage theme! Etsy is a great site to look for unique items like this… Check out this vintage croquet set from the 1970s on Etsy.

    Vintage Chairs and Tables

The chairs and tables you purchase for your picnic party can be used as outdoor furniture all year round. Spend one morning or afternoon checking out some local antique shops and you’re guaranteed to find some cute chairs and tables to use for your picnic party. Garage sales can also be gold mines for little treasures such as these. If you’re not totally in love with the color of your vintage chairs and tables, don’t let that deter you from buying them. You can always put a fresh coat of paint on them!

    Pretty Backyard Lights

Whether you’re having your picnic party in your own backyard or renting out a beautiful outdoor event space for the day, lighting is crucial in setting the ambiance for your soirée. Try to find pretty lights to string along the trees, such as paper lanterns, small holiday lights, or vintage metal and glass lanterns you can stick candles in. While you want your lights to look vintage, you may not want them to actually be vintage, since many old lights have outrageous wattage and can break easily. Look for good quality lights and candleholders at places like Pottery Barn and Brookstone since their products typically last a long time.

    Hammocks and Outdoor Art

Give your guests some areas to relax and daydream by setting up a few hammocks and butterfly chairs at your vintage picnic party. As a tip, you could also find some outdoor inspired art and place them in the trees and on the tables to give your space a bohemian vibe. For example, place a piece of canvas art on one of the lower tree branches. You could also hunt for vintage items like an old transistor radio or typewriter to display at your charming picnic party.

    Food and Drinks

Serve your food and drinks in mason jars for a stress free party. If your party is going to have a little inside space you could always set up your food and dessert tables in there as well.
