Trends in Events from Catch My Party: Pattern Parties

    September 24, 2013

We recently caught up with Jillian from Catch My Party, the ultimate DIY party resource, to talk about hot new trends in events, and pattern parties are hot, hot, hot! The idea here is to essentially pick a particular pattern and incorporate it into your party décor, cakes, invitations, and anywhere else you can think to fit it. Check out our ideas below for throwing your own pattern parties!

Start your party off right by creating fun and eye-catching invitations using your chosen pattern as the border or background. There are tons of websites such as Etsy, Zazzle, and Catch My Party where you can buy your invitations and customize them to your liking. Be sure to include the address of your event venue as well as the date and time of the party. It’s best to order a few extras since you’re bound to think of a couple of people you’d like to invite to your party last minute.

What’s your favorite pattern? Plaid? Polka Dot? Chevron? Choose a pattern you really love so that your personal style comes through in your event décor. One of the most popular patterns popping up at pattern parties recently comes from a hot hairstyle trend right now… Ombre! While it’s not technically a pattern, it’s a neat idea to incorporate into your next party if you prefer to stick to one or two basic shades rather than a crazy multicolored pattern.

For example, you could do a pink and blue ombre gender reveal party. To pull off a party like this, simply take the time to create a few cute decorations, such as a hanging banner, decorative paper lanterns or balloons, and food labels. Make sure each decoration has the pink and blue ombre pattern in it somewhere. They don’t all have to be the same, in fact adding some unique nuances and bold shades help to make your décor look authentically DIY. If you’re feeling extra creative, why not create some yarn wrapped ombre monogrammed letters for your event? To do this, buy some wooden letters, yarn in three different shades, super-glue, and wrapping. You could even do an ombre layer cake by dying each layer a slightly different hue of one color.

Zebra pattern parties are a popular theme for baby showers and girl birthdays. Pink is a popular color to go with the zebra theme to give it a girly twist. From a Zebra striped cake, to zebra goody bags, the options are practically endless when it comes to decorating for your event.

Now that fall is upon us, it’s time to start thinking about Halloween parties! To tie in a pattern for your Halloween party, go for a black, white, and orange Polkadot and Chevron Halloween theme. Buy some chevron napkins and make or buy a Polkadot backdrop for photos or to brighten up your dessert table. Make your food labels with a Polkadot border and buy some Polkadot baking cups to display your cupcakes!

Chevron rainbow themes are really popular right now for kids birthday parties. The great thing is that this theme is super easy to pull off since rainbow decorations are easy to find. Search for rainbow chevron tablecloths and paper plates at your local party supply store. Also, if you’re looking for ways to spruce up a certain area of your event space, consider making a simple ribbon banner. To make this, just get a long piece of string, and tie ribbons all the way down it. For example, tie one ribbon in red, then orange, then yellow, and so on until you have created a rainbow. Then to finish it up, break up each rainbow set with a ribbon that has a chevron rainbow pattern on it.
