How to Dress for your Corporate Holiday Party

    December 19, 2012

If you’re going to a corporate holiday party, chances are you’ll be told what the attire is and what you should wear ahead of time. Is it informal, or do you have to dress up? Is it a cocktail party at a restaurant, or an ugly Christmas sweater party? If you’re struggling and you just don’t know what to wear, think about dressing the way that you would dress for work. Here are a few tips and tricks that might help you when you dig through your closet.

What to wear (women): As mentioned before, think of what you would wear to the office! Blazers, simple dresses, and elegant outfit pieces are perfectly appropriate. However, for a corporate holiday party, you can take your office-wear up a notch and add something to make it special: a fun necklace, some cute shoes, tights or a really great hairstyle will definitely do the trick. Try incorporating holiday colors into your outfit. If you’re going to go out looking for something to wear, remember that you can keep it simple and still look great! The event venue will also tell you a lot about how you should dress. If it’s a five star, first class restaurant, you should be formal. Trust us: it’s better not to stand out when you’re among all of your co-workers.

What not to wear (women): It’s better to be safe than sorry. Don’t wear bright, shiny, or flashy dresses that make a statement and avoid tight, short, and revealing clothing that might give people the wrong idea. You don’t want to be the center of attention at the party because of what you’re wearing. You have a professional image that you need to maintain, so don’t go overboard or dress inappropriately because a corporate holiday party is still a work environment and you are being watched by your colleagues and co-workers and employers.

Men: For men it can be much easier: they only have so much to choose from! Men should never wear sandals, shorts, t-shirts, or tank tops to a fancy holiday party. They need to keep their attire professional as well. Dress clothes are great: and maybe, since it’s a holiday party, add a red or green tie or shirt! You can get in the spirit and dress nicely at the same time!

If you look good, you’ll feel good. If you are dressed differently or inappropriately, chances are that you’ll feel uncomfortable and you won’t have a great time at the party. We want to know how it goes!
