Fresh, Healthy Options to Serve at Your Summer Soiree

    July 4, 2012

It's bikini season which means fresh, healthy meals will be greatly appreciated at your next gathering. Choosing the lighter options doesn't mean you have to sacrifice taste.  Here are some great options that are light on calories but heavy on flavor!

Rather than serving creamy onion dip with fried potato chips, opt for a lighter appetizer like Black Bean and Corn Salsa with baked tortilla chips.  This fresh and healthy option is low fat, low carb and absolutely delicious!

If you're hosting a barbecue, ditch the hamburgers and hot dogs!  Grilled shrimp skewers are a much healthier choice and far from bland.

Potato salad is a summer favorite that traditionally calls for mayonaise and vinegar dressing, making it high in fat and calories.  Instead, use a recipe with low-fat or alternative ingredients.  We love Sour Cream and Dill Potato Salad with reduced fat sour cream and non-fat greek yogurt.

When it comes to dessert, cutting calories while keeping flavor can be a little tricky.  Try substituting heavy cream for low-fat milk or regular sugar for a low-calorie sugar blend.  You'd be surprised how many calories can be reduced by making just a few simple substitutions.  Homemade banana split cheesecake can even be considered a healthy option with only 247 calories!  If you're looking for a dessert more appropriate for summer try a berry trifle, a light and delicious dessert that will be the perfect ending to your summer gathering!
