DIY vs Store Bought Party Gifts...Weighing the Pros and Cons

    September 26, 2012

When deciding what to give your best friend, sibling, or hostess of your next party, it can be difficult to decide between making the gift yourself or to purchase one. Here are a few things to consider before making your decision...

Are you making the gift yourself to save money? A homemade gift is typically a cheaper option than something store bought. However, this isn't always the case. Before deciding whether or not you're going to let out your inner Martha Stewart, remember that craft supplies can be pricey. Do you already have a hot glue gun and plenty of refills? A glue gun alone starts around $15. You may also need to purchase other special craft tools before getting started so remember your budget. It may turn out that even after purchasing craft supplies your DIY gift is still cheaper than the store bought version, but do your research ahead of time just incase!

Short on time?  Most DIY gifts are more time consuming than a trip to the store or waiting for an online purchase to be delivered. Paint alone can take up to 24 hours to dry and intricate stenciling may take several hours (even days if you don't have the patience or large block of time to set aside). If you have the time and patience for a DIY gift or you have selected something that can be created within a reasonable amount of time, then the personal touch is worth the extra effort. Otherwise, a quick trip to the store is your best bet.

Nothing compares to the personal touch. Even a homemade card is more sentimental than something purchased at Hallmark. But you might want to ask yourself, "Am I capable of creating a quality homemade party gift?". If the answer is yes, then by all means start searching through your Pinterest and get crafting. But if you're questioning your artistic capabilities, then a store bought gift may be the better option. How would you feel if instead of buying you those super cute earrings from Nordstrom for your birthday, your bestie spent her time and money trying to recreate them herself and they looked like fish hooks and tin foil? It would put you in a pretty uncomfortable situation since you'd probably never want to wear the earrings but wouldn't want to hurt her feelings. So trust your intuition before you get started, and if the end result isn't anything like the "real thing", then do your friend a favor and  just go buy it!
