To decorate your backyard for a luau you will need lots of color and flowers. Whether the flowers are real or fake, make sure you have plenty of Birds of Paradise and Hibiscus everywhere. Stop by your local party supply store and stock up on streamers, fake palm trees, and surfboards. While you are there stock up on Leis to put by the front door to give to the guests when they enter.
Food and Drink
Set up a buffet style table with finger-food snacks like goldfish and macadamia nuts. Skip the heavy meal and opt for fresh fruit like pineapples and papaya and make tropical smoothies. For dessert whip up a pineapple upside down cake, it is both delicious and festive.
What’s a luau without a hula hoop contest? Gather up some colorful hula hoops and encourage guests to compete in a hula hoop competition. The participant who can go the longest without stopping or dropping the hoop wins! Limbo contests are another great activity to keep guests entertained and having a blast! Whoever can go the lowest without falling or hitting the pole wins!
For an outdoor barbecue you will want to adorn tables with colorful linens, flowers, and candles. Don’t go too over the top as there will most likely be little kids running around recklessly. Be sure to have plenty of fresh towels and sunscreen around for all of the guests to use.
Keep dining simple by setting up a table with delicious barbecue foods. Have platters of burgers, hot dogs, and fried chicken. Fill bowls with chips, fruit, and condiments. Have ice chests with sodas and beverage containers with lemonade and fruit juice. This way everything is setup and eliminates the hassle of the host having to serve everyone and making sure that are happy and satisfied.
For backyard entertainment, fill the pool with fun games such as basketball and volleyball. If you do not already have this equipment, don’t worry for there are many other fun pool games such as Marco Polo and water tag. Stock up on pool toys like inner tubes, noodles, and diving rings.
Under the Sea
To decorate an under the sea themed party you will needs lots of blue and green. Whether it be streamers, table linens, or frosting, shades of blues and greens will be your primary color pallet. Go to your local party supply store and pick up nautical themed items such as mermaids, anchors, sea shells, and star fish. Fill bowls with shells as centerpieces and scatter them about on tables. As long as there is lots of blue and green it is hard to go wrong.
What does one serve at an under the sea pool party? Anything. Sea food of course would be the best option, such as grilled fish sandwiches and sushi, but that can get expensive. If the budget doesn’t allow for seafood, serve anything from barbecue to simple finger foods like PB & J. No matter the main course, have plenty of snacks and delicious desserts.
For some competitive entertainment encourage guests to come dressed as the best mermaid, whoever has the best costume, wins! It would also be fun to setup a photo shoot area with an under the sea background that contestants could take pictures in front of; print the pictures out and give them to the guests as party favors!
